Hello Everybody,

I have been lurking more than I have talked. I live down here in So. Fla. my neighbor and I are starting a BB trail in our neighborhood, we don't know if they ( BB) will come but we will build it anyway!

Do BB use spanish moss in their nest? We realize its too late to hope for BB this year but we will be ready next season!!

Charlotte ;-)

Hi All; In Gary's recent post "saturation" he mentioned finding a nest composed of leaf veins and pine needles. BB's use all kinds of material, evidentally.

A couple of weeks ago I checked a box ( a second nesting in this box this season) and the nest material cought my eye . At first I thought it was pine needles; but after removing a few, they appeared to be the stems of a fruit. The nest was composed of over 90% of these stems. And there were anywhere from two to 12 in a bundle.

The source of these stems bugged me enough that I finally found them under a Red Maple tree about 100 ft. from the nest box. They were the peduncle of the "fruit" of the maple with the seeds detached. They were already nice and dry and made good nest material.

BB's are resourceful ..

How neat! The kids love to make "nests" with these on our playground, but I told an inquiring youngster this spring that I'd never seen a nest made with them. I'll be prepared next time!
