Use of Tapes to Attract Bluebirds

For those of you using tapes (and, as someone cautioned, always sparingly), you might be interested to know what bird Studies- Canada feels about tape quality. I do their Marsh Monitoring Program and they send a new tape every other year. They feel that tape quality deteriorates that quickly and can make a difference in which birds we attract by using the tape. And they ask us to monitor each of our sites only twice a year so the tapes would not necessarily be terribly overused.

So, if you are using a tape on occasion, you might not want to use the same one for too many years.

To: Randy Barber, et al,
The Bluebird tape I use is a series of songs and calls that I recorded
last year from this very Listserve. I forget who put it on his website. Was
it Koby? Maybe some other lister can remember, or can give Randy a clue
about how to acquire it. I thought the quality was (is) excellent. What the
birds thought, I have no idea. At least they were curious, and came to check
it out.

Subject: Where to get taped bluebird call?

Hello,

I am looking for a tape recording of the Eastern Bluebird Song/Call. I have 6 nest boxes on my 5 acres here in Nashville, TN and never see any bluebirds. I have titmice, chickadees, woodpeckers, martins, but no bluebirds. I know they are around but just not near my yard. What I would like to do is play a BB recording to see if I can get a male to fly over and check out my nestboxes. Kind of like I did with the purple martin dawnsong to get martins to nest on my property. Can anybody help me obtain a good quality tape of the bluebird call? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Randy Barber

Does that work? Is it a legitimate thing to do? I'm kind of in the same position - I know there are bluebirds nearby, but I've never seen one in my yard.

Hello EveryBIRDie:

For those looking for the bluebird song, click on Reference Guide Website:

http://birds.cornell.edu/bluebirds#unsub

and then to the Song, or possibly direct:

http://bluebirdia.8k.com/bbsong.htm

As for answers to other questions about how/when/how long to play it, I don't have the answers. Perhaps someone with greater expertise than I could respond.

I do know that the Dinner Song for the chickadees does work for calling in chickadees. However, once they're on the scene, I don't usually play it extensively...don't want to scare them off.

Happy bluebirding!

Stan

Subject: Playing Bluebird songs to attract them

Hi Randy..Most good wild bird places sell high quality CD recordings of all the birds. I have 2...one by Stokes & one by Peterson. Last year I experimented with playing the EABL songs/calls from my deck in the backyard. (Other bird species also) All my bird stuff (feeders, bird baths, nest boxes, etc.) are in the backyard..close to the deck & house windows, so I can study many bird's feeding, nesting behavior, etc. I experimented with several different bird specie songs & calls. And this is the bottom line of my conclusions. Only play a particular bird specie song/call not more than 2 or 3 times at most.. and wait.. if the bird is out of hearing range..that's probably why he doesn't show up..if & when that bird or birds do show up.. DO NOT KEEP PLAYING IT FURTHER, as I observed that it will definitely make the bird nervous & agitated, etc. You get my point. And most of all, never play it during the nesting season. (I never have. But common sense tells you ..NO..) What I observed as far as the EABL is concerned & assuming he's around somewhere near, is that the male comes to check his territory by flying all over the place..back & forth to the box & literally all over the place.. & it was obvious to me that he was clearly nervous & confused by hearing his song played extensively..most likey thinking there was a competitor nearby. You said that you're not seeing any Bluebirds in your yard. Do you have a reasonably good BB habitat for placing your nestboxes. I have found that adding a BB feader nearby greatly increases the chances of getting them to stay around. If you want to email me directly for further discussion about this, feel free to do so. Hope this helps.. Horace in NC.

I would like information about audio tapes of bird calls. The birding publications have many advertisements for them but I would like some personal recommendations from birders who have actually used them. If it's not too much trouble, mention what features you like/dislike etc.

I would like information about audio tapes of bird calls.

I have a two-volume set (that is, 2 tapes purchased separately) called "Know Your Bird Sounds." 1991, Lang Elliott Naturesound Studio, P.O. Box 84, Ithaca, N.Y. 14851-0084. Distr. by Chelsea Green Pub. Co., but 2 addresses are given (Postal Service changing adresses,  no doubt!) 52 Labombard Rd. North, Lebanon, N.H. 03766; and Rt. 113, P.O. Box 130, Post Mills, Vt. 05058-0130. Phone 800-639-4099 in either case.

These tapes are my favorite for playing while I'm driving. Good, concise narration, songs plus additional calls and the related behavior. One is Backyard/City, one is Countryside; 35 birds on each. (No bluebirds, though :-(  Each comes with a 32-page booklet, also good, but of course I've gotten them separated from the tapes now!

No particulr drawback to the tapes--except no bluebirds.

Countryside: ISBN 1-878194-02-X
Backyard/City: ISBN 1-878194-01-1

Ron,

The tapes of bird calls and songs that I use, is the Peterson Field Guides, Birding by Ear. There are east and west versions. It goes through a description of songs and calls of birds that are similar, describing them and giving ways of remembering them. Then at the end, the calls and songs are categorized by habitat without naming the birds, so you can practise identifying them in a different context. There is a booklet that goes along with the tapes that gives the narration, and the list of the songs to test your acuracy of identification. I have found it to be very helpful. The songs and calls are very well recorded. You can find them in most larger bookstores.

I absolutely agree with Mary. The Peterson tapes are incredible. Once you're out in the field, you'll hear the narrator's words come back to you when you hear a song, and you'll be able to identify it right away using his memory tricks, such as "Quick, three beers! -- Olive-sided Flycatcher, or "Pee-a-wee" -- Eastern Wood Peewee. You'll even learn how to differentiate woodpeckers.

I also have the Peterson CD, but it's not nearly as helpful to the new birder because it has almost all of the Eastern birds in rapid succession, no explanation. You should definitely buy it (if you have a CD player), but get the tapes first!
