what was meant by some of the codes...not quite sure why
HOSP for house sparrow vs.
HS (house sparrow...why two letters of each word??? Just
curious... For EB, MB, WB, why not - instead of EABB (or
whatever letters are used? can't recall what they are, offhand,
without re-reading some of the e-mails.) As I'm reading
the "pro's" and "con's" of this on the
recent Newsletter chatline, I can
understand it takes less time to type than typing in full...and
as someone also noted, we are accustomed to using various
other abbreviations...e.g. - i.e. etc.

house sparrows, regularly and routinely when living in our
own home in Kokomo, Indiana. Usually rainy weather was the
best time...sparrows seemed to flock to the trap (seed cup
inside two open ends)...why in rainy weather, I don't
know, but they did. Since moving to St. Paul, MN in August,
1996, have been feeding birds...suet, medium chipped sunflower,
grape jelly, nectar, ear corn, shelled corn, peanuts. Haven't
set up a sparrow trap...sparrows don't seem to be that bothersome;
yes, there are some...but tear out their nests in boxes,
so...
In Indiana, I "LET" the sparrows build in a box,
lay eggs; then destroy the eggs...served as "lawn cleaning"--they
collect the debris, then I could clean
out next box--including eggs--in a paper/plastic bag and
"trash" it. Prefer to let them lay eggs – then
by destroying the eggs, they were not laying them in a
neighbor's somewhere else and raising little ones. Although
if they hatched, before I got them, I'd "plastic bag"
all--nest and little ones...put in garbage can. So... Sorry
for getting so verbose.
I allow house sparrows to use my nest boxes [SEE COMMENTS
ABOVE...Not ALL next boxes, just the one(s)I wanted to use
for "sparrow" control.

my first WEBL less than 5 years ago.

5) I am happy with alpha codes as I am a bird bander, but
I know what it was like for me to learn the codes when I
first started banding. Thus, in order to be user friendly,
just like in BIRDBAND-L, we are asked to state the bird's
name with the alpha code when first used. Of course, in
BIRDBAND we have 800+ codes to deal with, while you have
a short list of cavity nesters. BUT I think it is elitist
to talk in jargon unless everyone knows the jargon. And
for those who say "just look it up and learn it"
is certainly not being friendly to novices. If you are to
spread the faith so to speak, you need to make things user
friendly.
6) No I do not kill house sparrows. I do not remove or kill
ANY bird that uses my boxes. I am simply happy that someone
is using my boxes. What makes bluebirds so special that
only they deserve to use a bird box? Without HOSP, many
urban settings would be devoid of birds! Th recent thread
on HOWR is about bluebird people trying to pack boxes in
areas unsuitable to bluebirds (dense vegetation), so HOWR
take over.One interesting thing is that Pre-Columbus, it
is likely that bluebirds were quite rare, as there was a
dense hardwood forest from the Atlantic to the Mississippi.
It is likely that only when European man began to cut down
the forest and open up the land did bluebirds become abundant.
Then of course, we began to cut down trees, dead snags,
etc, that bluebirds became scarce.

Interior Bluebird Trail Society and the
contact person for NABS, a member of the NABS Speakers Bureau

4) - As stated above, I belong to the Southern Interior
Bluebird Trail Society in British Columbia. It is the only
formal bluebird society in the province, although there
are small areas of interest in bluebird conservation in
a couple of the Naturalist Clubs. Our trails and members
are in an area about 20,000 square miles ... we cover a
very large area of the province!

Some additional comments you may be interested in. I am
very seriously thinking of unsubscribing for the following
reasons , but do not because I am
interested in the progress of the movement of Bluebird nesting
northward.
* The topic of alpha codes is getting very tiresome. and
I do not appreciate having constantly to read the asinine
attitude of some of the learned
individuals who are inconsiderate of others who are not
familiar with alpha codes and/or new to birding. the latest
being Bleher I think that some individuals could actually
drive interested persons from Bluebirding. (watching, feeding,
nestboxes, monitoring, banding)
* I believe the list is for opinions and appreciate reading
peoples thoughts about all aspects of bluebirding. But I
do not think it is a place for some to criticize, so inconsiderately,
others opinions. I joined to learn; opinions can be given
and are acceptable without criticism. Springer should be
