To Darrell, et al,
The Bluebird is already on a U.S. stamp. It's a 3-center, and I carry a
100-stamp sheet of them around in my copy of "Bluebirds Forever" for
show-and-tell at my presentations. I can't remember the name of the painter, but
it's a very beautiful likeness, it seems to me. I'm sure that the folks at your
post office can tell you about it. I have somewhere a blowup which I printed
from the Internet. Browse a little.

Darrell, you are correct that the western bluebird has been submitted to the
US Postal Committee for consideration. I was looking through my past
publications last night to find the (NABS?) article on the nomination process
and wasn't able to put my finger on it, believe it was in "Bluebirds." It was my
understanding that the more interest (letters) that are received by the Postal
Service in support of a nomination, the more likely it is to be seriously
considered for a future stamp.
If no one else responds to your question with exact info, write again.
The western bluebird (WEBL) is the somewhat forgotten species. The eastern
and mountain bluebirds have the distinction of being state birds and both have
been honored on our U.S. postage stamps several times.
Therefore, I purchase several hundred of the 3-cent eastern bluebird stamps
each year to pass out to people who are curious about the birds we are helping.

Hello EveryBLUEBIRDer!
Per Elwell's suggestion, your local post office would surely have this
3-cents postage stamp, copies of which I also have.
This website notes the three-cent bluebird stamp:

Ask Jeeves for searching bluebird postage stamp revealed this website,
showing bluebird on a stamp as state bird of New York.

These bluebird stamps are available at OUR library, packaged in a set of 50,
but one needs only to tell them how many one wants. They are not behind the
counter, but rather out in the front of the post office. I don't know how long
they have been out, but these are the first I have seen.

If you want to see many stamps (including the Eastern Bluebird stamps) click
on the link below:
http://www.geocities.com/zjchxy/CurrentInUse/Usa/USinuse.htm The 3 cent
stamp was issued twice, once in 1991 (03 is printed on the stamp) and again in
1996 (3=A2 is printed on the stamp.) Otherwise, the stamps are identical.

We still have 4 sheets (100 per sheet) of the first ones issued in 1991 on
hand of the E. Bluebird. These were not the adhesive ones. I'm very pleased that
now the p. o. has adhesive stamps. They R easier to use but don't know if stamp
collectors like the adhesive or the old fashion type.

PS: Sorry, I forgot to add this post script. In our backyard we have a BB box
with 4 unhatched eggs and 1 egg that hatched on the 20th. Don't know why the
other 4 didn't hatch. Maybe too hot for the female to have sat on them.
Temperature today (and the rest of the week) in Central VA is in the mid 90's.

I solved the mystery of the missing stamps. If your post office does not have
the designation "Philatelist Center," they won't have them. Only "some" offices
carry this designation. So, if yours doesn't carry them, call around to another
local office. If you absolutely can't get them, send me a note off list and I
will be happy to mail you a sheet. My PO has them in sheets of 50, sealed,
mounted on cardboard. Phil Berry, Gulf Breeze, Florida
