Under normal conditions I usually check my 150 some boxes every
week, that is up until last year when due to various (some legit)
reasons, I only checked my trails 10 times during the whole
season. I know, this is totally inexcusable. However, last year
was my best year ever (Fledged 686) in over 18 years of Bluebirding.
During this good year I had 19 boxes containing three individual,
successful nests, fledging 12 to 16 birds out of each box. And,
each box had at least one double nest, that is a second nest
was built over the old one before I got back to clean out the
box.
Did I learn anything from this...? Is there, perhaps an advantage
to leaving old nests in the box...? One thing I did notice was
the top nest was always very shallow. Do the birds like to have
their second nest already half complete..? Did I do the
same thing this year..? No,..even though I was tempted, I cleaned
out almost every old nest before they started building a second
nest over it. Since this year appears to be the worst I have
ever had, next year I may resort to leaving the old nests in
the box.
Having, what I call a low vent PVC box, don't recall ever having
any trouble with blow flies, so I don't think the dirty nest
creates a problem in this area One final word about everyone
building a "better mousetrap," or rather Bluebird
box, that is... Build, or use what ever box that works for you.
After all, who will deny the fact that their's is the best.
I know mine are..!!!! My door is open for thoughts and ideas.

Subject: Excessive nest box interference
Also, there have been many posts from folks who have apparently
been closely watching nest boxes while under investigation by
birds, followed by nest building. During these phases there
is plenty of activity around the nest box. It's hard NOT to
notice them.
