Subject: Gilbertson box and tree swallows
Charlene Anchor, Central Illinois
This year I paired up a Gilbertson box with a Peterson box. Tree swallows nested in the Peterson last year and I thought I'd try the Gilbertson hoping for Bluebirds. The boxes are about 12-15 feet apart. At this point I have tree swallow nests started in both of the paired boxes with 4-5 tree swallows flying around both boxes and sitting on them. I know the Gilbertson is supposed to be for swallows too but it seems so small. Has anyone had swallows fledge from this style box? Do they adjust for the smaller space and lay fewer eggs? All I want is peace of mind!
Thanks for any responses.

Charlene, I have had TRES nest in Gilbertson boxes several years now, and they do just fine.
Here's a photo of Mama TRES sitting on her eggs in the nest - I was surprised when I went to check on the box that she was in there, and she sat there so placidly that I was able to snap her picture:

And here the newly hatched babies in Gilbertson box. It is a great box for being able to take pictures!

I did have one nesting of TRES in a Gilbertson box fail last year, but since they've always been fine in the Gilbertsno before, I don't think that had anything to do with what happened to them. We're not sure if it was blowfly (there appeared to be some in the nest, but not in sufficient numbers to have killed the babies), or if something else happened.

Yes, I have had Tree Swallows in the Gilbertson box and they made it okay. I have had six babies in the Gilbertson box some times.

I purchased one of these in April from Steve and it was $17.00 (website says
$17 for the first one, and additional boxes are $16.00 each). He also sells a universal trap for $9/$11.00 (web says $11, but he quoted $9.00) that fits very nicely in the PVC box. However, you cannot tell what you have caught until you open the roof. You can contact Steve at:

Aitkin, MN 56431
or call him at 218-927-1953 | website at http://www.gilbertsonnestbox.com/
Another box and trap you might consider are those made by Mel Bolt Traps.
These traps are terrific. You can easily identify the captured bird. He can be reached at 1515 Crosswind Ct., Wooster, OH 44691, phone 330-262-0448.
His prices are:
Bolt Trap Type "H" - $15.00 each plus $6.00 postage & handling Bolt Type Front Opening Nest Boxes - $15.00 each plus $8.00 postage & handling
Please be aware that he may not have many boxes left since they were limited on April 5th, and he usually sells through Jenna Birds (which is temporiarily selling stock at hand until possibly the Fall).
I hope this helps you some.

Subject: Re: Nestboxes made from recycled plastic?
I live in MidMissouri just outside of Jefferson City. I started a trail on my 50 acres this summer. I put up a variety of boxes. The hands down favorite of the birds seemed to be the Gilbertson PVC boxes that I got from Steve Gilbertson at gilbertsonnestbox.com. They are very easy to put up, easy to monitor and inexpensive. Go to his website if you want to see what they look like. They are made from thin pvc that attaches to a wood roof. It is designed to fit on a 1/2 in EMT pipe over a rebar rod. It is painted to look like birch on the outside and has kerns on the inside. I can not debate the theoretic issues relating to this box, but it was chosen much more often than any over box that I used. The pipe mounting itself has some predator deterrent, but I usually added a stovepipe baffle, some sand at the base (per Jack Finch) and some tanglefoot on the pipe. Chickadees, Eastern bluebirds, Treeswallows, and Prothonatory warblers all used these boxes successfully for me this summer. Interestingly the house wrens would build stick nests in these, but less so than in the wood boxes and none of these had a true nest completed by a house wren. No house sparrows attempted to nest in these, but the only house sparrow nesting attempt I encountered was in my purple martin house (which sadly never got purple martins in this its first year up). I do not want to over sell this, but this was by far the most successful box on my trail this year and the birds had NABS boxes, Petersons, chalets and others to chose from.
