Does anyone have a good form that they like for keeping records on their nest
boxes? If so, would you be willing to share it?

Cheryl,
I have made a form for my monitoring that is based on the Bluebird Recovery
Program of Wisconsin form, with a few changes. It includes date of visit, nest
present?, number of eggs, estimated date of hatch, number of young, number
fledged, species, with room for comments at each monitoring. I'd be glad to send
you a copy if you like. Let me know.

I guess it depends on how involved you want to get. Each year I set up a
loose leaf notebook using 8 1/2" by 11" lined paper with one page for each
nestbox. (80 this year). I carry a small pocket notebook when monitoring and
transfer this info to the loose leaf notebook later. This makes for quick
recording in the field and also leaves me with a separate record for each year.
Having a full page for each box also leaves plenty of room for special notes.
Not a fancy system but it works. Bluebird Bob, NE OK.

The good folks with the CBRP (California Bluebird Recovery Program) sent me
forms for individual nest box records, and a season end summary form. I got them
by fax, but found the print/format quality too poor for replication and use. Due
to that, I recreated them as a Word for Windows .DOC file. Now I can print them
up fresh and clean. In addition, I can add all of my common data, and don't have
to enter it by hand. I'd be happy to send an electronic copy to anyone who might
get benefit from it. While I hadn't asked, I don't think that CBRP would object.
As a side note, it would seem to me that a single consistent form would be
more useful rather than an eclectic ad hoc collection of various and diverse
bits of paper. Does (or would) NABS be willing to undertake a standard national
set of forms? I'd be willing to generate them for electronic release. But I
think the distribution and management of the docs should be done by a respected
national entity...
To take things one step further, besides being able to be printed up nice and
fresh, I'd intended the forms I created to become the model for an input form,
accessible via the web (I'm still working on that step...about 2/3's done). That
way data could be captured and easily acquired in real time. Since I'm my own
ISP and have my own servers, I wouldn't mind hosting such a site. It is my long
term goal to use my HPC to gather the field notes, and have that download to my
birding site via the web. I've got the pieces, I've just not yet worked out all
the details nor written the necessary "glue" programs to make it a smooth and
seamless operation...
A little further along that line; in order for me to differentiate between my
various boxes (and future boxes, I'd come up with a numbering scheme that could
be used to individually number each box. By adding two more letters, it could
serve as a national model. That way each nest box, on each trail, by each
member, in each state would be instantly reviewable by all. Data could be
gathered in a heartbeat. Trends would become instantly visible.
Just some thoughts...

The Birdhouse Network has monitoring forms posted on its website. One is for
field notes, the other a data summary sheet. Anyone can go to their site and
click on "Field Worksheet" to print them off.

I'm creating a form for field notes and a form for a summary for each nest
box on the Mountain City Bluebird Trail. (There are no mountains near Mountain
City!) 'Would appreciate a copy of forms that have worked well on trails and
suggestions for formatting and line items to include.
The forms I already have are: Cornell's, Stoke's and Illinois Bluebird
Project's.
Thanks!

Anyone have available a form designed to record the development of a BB
family from nest building to fledging? I would like to note the daily activities
and progress of the family in an organized manner rather than notes on my
calendar.

Stan,
I would be happy to send you a copy of the monitoring form I use, if you
aren't afraid of opening an attachment. I do have Norton anti-virus. If you
would like me to send it, let me know.

If you could design the perfect Bluebird trail journal, what would it be like?
What would each page include? Input, I need input!

Before I can give my ideas I'd need to know what would the journal be used
for? Simple enjoyment, teaching tool, or as data gathering for Cornell/NABS/or
your affiliate group?

You'll be able to find many monitoring sheets on line - - you can find
one "at" www.massbluebird.org Other organizations have them also. Experiment!
What I like to know besides the normal questions are:
- What are the weather conditions when I monitor - intensely hot or cold?
- What are the bluebirds doing when I monitor?
- Do I see both the male and female?
- I like to write down exactly what the little chicks look like - that way
I learn about their - development until I finally get a sense of how old chicks
are when I come to the box.
- Is there a runt?????? How is it developing?
Those are some questions off the top of my head. :-) H
