Robert Wilson's PVC NABS style nestbox

The cut dimensions for the 1 x 6 PVC fencing material.
bulletBack - 1 x 6 x 20 mitered on one end at 22.5 degrees.
bulletFront - 1 x 6 x 10.75 hole 1.5 for (Mountain Bluebirds) inches 6 inches from bottom.
bulletSides - (2) 1 x 8 x 13 1/8 mitered to 10 inches that equals 22.5 degrees.
bulletTop - 1 x 10 x 13.5 mitered at both ends 22.5 degrees.
bulletFloor - 1 x 6 x 6 with corners nipped off for drainage.

Drill 3 3/8 " air holes near top on the sides.

I drill a hole on each side and in the front for a nail to keep front closed.

Remember to make toe scratches for swallows to get out if you have them.

So how do you get 8" and 10" out of a 1 x 6 ? You rip off one cell or 2" from a 1 x 6 and two cell or 4" off for the top.  The top is attached by inserting a wood block into a cell and screw it in place and then using a deck screws attach the top to the sides.

I had other questions too.

  1. The boxes should be warm in cold temps. as the cell seem to insulate the inside from both hot and cold.
  2. This flat material that is about 1" thick with ribs every 2" and is open on both ends.
  3. They do make round PVC pipe but this is easier to work with, clean out and monitor.
  4. This design is like NABS style nesting boxes.
  5. I would love to send a box to Ellis Bird Farm.

You do need a table saw to make these boxes and PVC pipe glue and cleaner. I also make jigs to hold the parts while the glue sets up about 15 to 20 minutes at room temp. This makes the process much faster and you get a box that is align correctly. The other thing I found out is that if you rough up the joints the glue holds better, sand paper wire brush, etc..

I think that the picture will make all the directions understandable.
